CLASSES & LECTURES

Birmingham Youth Policy Summit
June 20-June 24, 2011
The Keystone Center's Birmingham Youth Policy Summit is a program for high school students in the Birmingham area. In partnership with Alabama Power, The Birmingham Botanical Gardens, The Cahaba River Society, The Daniel Foundation and World Wildlife Fund, the Birmingham YPS program will focus on water resources in the southeast. Approximately 40 high school students will do independent research on water issues in the area, come together to share their research and receive problem solving, leadership and negotiation training and participate in topic-related field trips. They will spend time with a panel of professional experts who represent diverse stakeholders in society who can discuss the real-world challenges of grappling with the issues the students researched. The students also study various stakeholder roles, and we guide them through a youth directed policy dialogue to develop consensus-based, sustainable policy recommendations. Last, we provide them with the opportunity to present their findings to their community and local leaders, as well as share the result of their work across the region through a set of written policy recommendations. The public is invited to attend the students' Final Policy Presentation on the afternoon of Friday, June 24.
Students can attend the program individually or in school teams. Click here for a copy of the application and further information on participating in this program or contact Jessye Crowe-Rothstein at 202.452.0139 / jcrothstein@keystone.org.
