It’s a good thing that Red Mountain Theatre Company’s production of “The Color Purple” is presented in its cabaret space in the basement of the Kress Building.
Because in its opening moments, the gospel number “Mysterious Ways” raises the roof, and for two-and-a-half hours, the show never looks back.

It’s a spectacular show from start to finish, with some amazing performances, a beautiful set by Andy Fitch and an epic story that is raw and disturbing, but ultimately joyous.

As executive director of Red Mountain Theatre Company, Keith Cromwell has overseen some big shows.
“The Wizard of Oz” and “The Sound of Music” had big casts, and Red Mountain Theatre Company’s annual Christmas extravaganza features just about everyone in Birmingham who can sing a Christmas carol.
But now RMTC is mounting “The Color Purple.” And, yes, the cast is huge — 28, which is probably the largest non-Christmas show cast RMTC has had — but presenting the Tony Award-winning musical based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alice Walker seems even bigger to Cromwell.
