    South of Gold Mountain

Presented by and Samford University at Samford University Wright Center

    April 19, 2015

    South of Gold Mountain

South of Gold Mountain is an artistic interpretation, choreographed by H.T. Chen, Artistic Director, and Dian Dong, Associate Director, of the H.T. Chen Dance Center, based on the images and oral histories of the Chinese that settled in the southern states prior to WWII. Early Chinese settlers refer to the United States as “Gold Mountain”, a term deriving from the Gold Rush era. Starting from the diaspora that led the Chinese to the South, this piece is a collective journey of these individuals. South of Gold Mountain pays tribute to those whose power of faith, tradition, work ethic and bonds to other Chinese families in the South, allowed them to overcome the hardships they experienced and endured. South of Gold Mountain will be performed by the H.T. Chen Dance Company as part of the Wright Center’s Signature Series as Samford University and the Alabama Asian Cultures Foundation co-sponsor one matinee performance at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 19, 2015, in the Wright Performing Arts Center. A dessert reception will follow.
