Native plants found in soils along rivers and creeks (riparian) survive and thrive in fluctuating moisture conditions. Periodic flooding alternating with rapid drainage creates soil conditions in the floodplain from very wet to dry. Plants growing in-stream are challenged by extended periods of soil saturation and rapidly moving water. This class will explore the vegetation and the associated insects, macro-invertebrates, fish and birds in and around the Cahaba River and a major tributary, Shades Creek. We will explore by canoe and by foot.
