Rock, Soul, Blues from Alabama The Dozens were formed in 2011 by the husband and wife team of Steven and Shelley Butler with the desire to play music with soul and feeling that’s not typically found anymore. Shelley was born with deep musical roots, in her youth her family traveled Alabama churches as a Gospel group. But, she’s as likely to channel Prince or Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy as she is Aretha or Bonnie Raitt. Guitarist/vocalist Travis Posey was a perfect fit with his love of the Blues. One of the best guitar players around, he’s logged many hours on southern stages. Chip Dews (guitar) is just too funky to be ignored. He’s a master of improvisation and just oozes rhythm. Bass guitarist Brent Irvin is a disciple of some of the greats, Duck Dunn, David Hood, and Paul McCartney are all evident in his playing. The perfect pocket player that knows how, and when to bring it. Speaking of pocket, drummer Steven Butler preaches it. The “less is more” mentality of players like Buddy Miles and Levon Helm are alive and well behind The Dozens drumset. To round out the group, they brought in veteran keyboardist Dan Hocter. One of the few true B3 players around, Dan brings a richness to the sound of the band that cannot be matched.
