Grandmother’s Garden at Sloss Quarters presents

The July 8 Walk and Talk–Plantain Salve-Grandma’s Sure-fire Remedy runs from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the garden at Sloss Quarters.

This common green weed is nature’s band aid. Made into a salve, it has traditionally helped heal cuts and insect bites. Its anti-microbial and anti-septic properties make it a go-to herb for minor, external injuries. Making a salve will be demonstrated.

Leading the Walk and Talk will be Antonia Viteri and Sallie Lee. Viteri is an architect, landscape architect, and herbalist with certificates in Herbal Studies in California and from Alabama herbalist Phyliss Light of Arab. Lee is a horticulturalist who serves as an Urban Regional Extension Agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, working with homeowners and school and community groups, such as Grandmother’s Garden.

About Grandmother’s Garden

Located adjacent Birmingham Historical Society’s 1905 house in Sloss Quarters, where industrial workers once lived and raised their food and medicine chest, the garden recreates a home garden of the early 20th century, the days before commercial fertilizers, hybrid seeds, and highly mechanized practices. Then and now, plots separated by gravel walks are laid out for a family’s vegetalbe, kitchen and medicinal herbs, fruits and flowers.

These free hour-long programs led by specialists take place on Second Saturdays from March to November, rain or shine, but not in inclement weather.
