Aldridge Repertory Theatre, Inc. (ART) was officially organized in November 1984. ART, named in honor the late Ira Aldridge, became incorporated in the state of Alabama in October 1988. Its mission is to identify, cultivate and showcase multi-cultural artistic excellence. ART received its 501(c)(3) status in January 1993.

Over the years, ART has produced many shows including: the Pulitzer Prize winning play Fences; the Broadway hit musical Purlie, the critically acclaimed off-Broadway show Trouble In Mind, and the gospel Broadway musical, Black Nativity, as well as, How He lied to Her Husband; Dance With Dawson; One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show; Admahl and the Night Visitors, and I, Too, Sing America! and Rhythm ‘N’ Roots written and directed by Birmingham native Annie Joe Edwards.
