      BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- If Joel Cummins blinks an eye on Wednesday night at the WorkPlay soundstage, don’t assume that the keyboard player for Umphrey’s McGee has a fleck of dust on his cornea.
      Chances are, he’s sending a signal to his bandmates, communicating an idea about the song in progress. Umphrey’s McGee, an improvisational rock band from Chicago, has developed many such cues over its 15-year history.
      One step back. Two steps forward. A single blink. A double blink. An expansive wave of the guitar. A nimble hand gesture that mimics a drummer hitting a hi-hat cymbal. Collapse
