Birmingham Children's Theatre exists to educate, entertain and enrich the lives of children through the magic of professional theater. One of the nation's oldest and largest professional theatre companies for young audiences, BCT produces high-quality, professional theatrical entertainment and curriculum-relevant arts education experiences for children and families. As the resident professional theatre of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC), BCT operates the 150-seat Dominick Studio Theatre, the intimate 250-seat Wee Folks Theatre for students ages 3-6 and the larger 950-seat Mainstage Theatre for students ages 6-up.Each year BCT puts on 9 professionally produced shows, 4 of which tour over 30,000 miles to arts centers, schools and communities as part of the Theatre-In-Motion touring educational outreach program. In-house productions at the BJCC annually play to over 110,000 school students in grades K-12, while Theatre-In-Motion educational outreach tours reach over 50,000 additional students each year in approximately 100 cities across Alabama and the Southeast. BCT’s Academy of Performing Arts Classes provide one-on-one instruction for students ages 3-18 in theatre training and fundamental childhood growth skills.Established in 1947, BCT has touched the lives of over twelve million students throughout its six-decade history. BCT's ongoing New Voices Project has commissioned over 50 original scripts, stories, musicals and adaptations for young audiences since 1982 alone, and maintains a commitment to discovering new voices among playwrights, and the presentation and experimentation in dramatic literature for youth.

Other classic works should take a page from “Peter Pan,” the Birmingham Children’s Theatre production that has its last performances on Friday.

No, the music isn’t as memorable as the 1954 stage version that starred Mary Martin, and the special effects aren’t as spectacular as those in the 1991 film “Hook.” Collapse

“I am not an actor! I’m a movie star!”

With that perfectly placed shout by Peter O’Toole in the film My Favorite Year, we see how the actor can place himself above it all in a self-delusional fit. That is definitely not how it is at the Birmingham Children’s Theater.

Teamwork and the wearing of multiple hats is de rigueur at BCT. From the costume shop to administration, having multiple talents is what keeps this place humming in spite of small budgets and the necessity for having the skills of TV’s MacGyver. For over 65 years, the BCT has been educating, entertaining and enriching the lives of children…some of us, not so young anymore. Collapse
