ACA has already approved the “Competencies for Addressing Spiritual and Religious Issues in Counseling” put out by ASERVIC in 2009, and several other clinical boards approve a language for multicultural care that necessarily includes religious multiculturalism. Have you increased your competencies to the level required in this area? This workshop is meant to facilitate the building of your skills to the required level. It is intended to increase and enhance the current dialogue about how to be ethically responsible for the spiritual issues that arise in therapy. Given that these issues are extremely common among our typical client population, it is time we learn how to deal effectively with these myriad religious and spiritual issues from an ethical and competent interfaith/interspiritual perspective.
OBJECTIVES
Participants will define spiritual abuse, spiritual wounding, spiritual crisis, transpersonal and other spiritual issues, likely to present in therapy.
Participants will learn of the various ethical concerns regarding the therapeutic treatment of spiritual problems.
Participants will gain knowledge regarding spiritual diversity, particularly with regard to the accepted core competencies.
Participants will gain knowledge of the various transference/countertransference issues that may arise while working with spiritual problems and various ways to deal with them ethically and effectively.
