Japanese Prints

Dr. Roy T. Ward, Jr. (1922–2015) of Watkinsville, Georgia was a doctor by profession, but an artist at heart. Not only was he a skilled physician, but also an accomplished painter in both oils and watercolors, and a talented printmaker, as well. He was a photographer and author, and also a collector of regional quilts and Japanese prints. He became interested in Japanese prints while in medical school and collected them whenever and wherever he could.

A friend to the Museum for many years, Dr. Ward donated a collection of over 100 18th, 19th, and 20th Century Japanese woodblock prints and woodblock printed books to the collection in 2013.

The 14 prints on view are but a small sample of Dr. Ward’s wonderful gift, which is the largest and most important donation of such material to the Museum.
