Unity Rally: Resisting Jeff Sessions in Birmingham, AL

Today, immigrants, people of color, and allies from ¡HICA! (Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama), ACIJ (Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice), GBM (Greater Birmingham Ministries), BLM (Black Lives Matter), Adelante Alabama Worker’s Center, NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), and the group White Birminghamians for Black Lives announces the upcoming “Resisting Jeff Sessions” Unity Rally on January 14, just one week before Donald Trump’s inauguration, to stand united against the nomination of Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III for Attorney General of the United States.

On January 14, immigrants, families, and allies will rally in Birmingham (as a part of the national immigrants’ day of action coinciding with events in nearly 50 locations nationwide) to demonstrate our unity, and express how the appointment of Jeff Sessions does not represent our communities.

The Birmingham, AL rally will be held in front of the Robert S. Vance Federal Building (1800 5th Avenue N & 18th Street, Birmingham, AL 35203) from 2pm to 3pm, and everyone is invited to join.

“DACA may seem like something unnecessary to some but it’s extremely helpful for young people who want to contribute to this country by furthering our education and working. Jeff Sessions has always stood against benefits for the immigrant community and these politics have isolated Alabama. Now we are in danger of the whole country becoming like Alabama,” said Roshell Aguilar, DACA recipient and community leader.

The rally will feature speakers from the Muslim community, the LGBTQ community, the African American community, and the Latino immigrant community. Each speaker will share their story as well as represent the transformational solidarity and inclusivity we wish to see in this country. The opportunity to stand as one Birmingham has come to our door and our communities will respond with unity and love. Where this election’s intention is to sow fear, uncertainty, and division, on the contrary it has awoken a sense of solidarity and alliance in our communities.
