Could you imagine becoming an adult without the support of caring adults? Our mission is assisting at-risk and aging out foster care youth to transition (from care) into sustainable and connected independence.

Over 60% of older foster children who leave care do so without identified housing and become immediately homeless. In the Birmingham metro that translates into approximately 80 foster children facing homelessness as they leave care annually.

“We know that connection to at least one caring stable adult can decrease and even eliminate the risk of homelessness, unemployment, incarceration, trafficking and even the generational cycle of foster care.” Said Second Shift’s Executive Director and Founder, Tammy Spence. Tammy continues,  “But to facilitate connection to a mentoring adult we have to first ensure that the youth has their basic care needs met so we help with housing, life skills and education and employment too. Helping foster youth to overcome the obstacles as they leave foster care changes the trajectory of their life allowing them to overcome the obstacles”
