The Southern Environmental Center (SEC) is the largest educational facility of its kind in Alabama and can handle groups of up to 100 visitors at a time. In addition to its award-winning Interactive Museum and EcoScape Gardens, the SEC is also active in the community. Our focus is on urban environmental issues including air and water quality, sprawl, and transportation. It has initiated a number of model partnerships targeting water quality, smog, and urban sprawl. Our Community EcoScape Program converts vacant lots into outdoor classrooms. Currently, we have twelve community EcoScapes in places like Brown Springs to Tarrant to Homewood. We offer field trip opportunities for groups of all ages including schools, scouts, master gardeners, churches, and other community organizations. Visitors may tour the Interactive Museum and the EcoScape and make a craft (EcoArt) from discarded materials.

Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is located in Pinson, Alabama and is over 450 acres. The preserve is generally open Wednesday through Sunday (closed M & Tu) for fishing and hiking from 8 to 4 pm. Front gate locked 30 minutes prior to closing. Field trips for grades 4th to high school are available for schools, scouts, or other community organizations. Please see website for offerings.
