OLLI of Greater Birmingham presents: HEALTHCARE IN THE SENIOR YEARS. Each of the 5 sessions in this course will cover different topics. On November 1, Dr. Andrew Duxbury, Professor of Gerontology, UAB will discuss theories of aging: what is old, how do we define health, normal physical changes, life expectancy versus life span, biologic theories of aging, things than enhance aging, and the Hayflick effect. On November 8, Dr. Macie Lynn, Pharmacy Manager for Walgreens will discuss Over-the-Counter Medicines including potential interactions with prescription medications as well as supplements, vitamins, and probiotics. November 15, Dr. Duxbury returns to discuss Syndromes and Diseases of aging, various body systems, the role of environment and non-medical factors and other. November 22, Dr. John Tingley, retired urologist, will present Changing Healthcare Landscape; Why is it Happening and What to Expect. Topics include costs of healthcare (insurance, pharmacy, devices, etc), impact of treatment settings, changing disease demographics and other. On November 29, Glenn Morgan, retired pharmacist, will review Immunizations for Seniors, including special situations such as seniors with child care responsibilities and international travel. A brief history of vaccination will be presented as well as vaccine safety.
