Organizers, educators, and artists in Jefferson County are excited to be celebrating the fourth annual presentation of The Green Book Project at The Birmingham Museum of Art.
The Project is a collaboration between Bush Hills S.T.E.A.M. Academy, the Greater Birmingham Arts Education Collaborative, The Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Jefferson County Memorial Project. The community is invited to visit the museum to see the student exhibit from May 25th to June 8th.
Aimed at teaching Birmingham youth about empathy and advocacy through learning about The Green Book, the Project enables the partners’ mission of educating young leaders. Each year, students are engaged in research of the original Negro Motorist Green Book that, for nearly 30 years, served as a guide for Black Americans seeking advice on safe places to eat and sleep when they traveled through the Jim Crow-era United States. Students craft poetry and art centering on The Green Book in creations that embrace tenants of compassion, encouragement, and equity.
