Ground Floor Contemporary is thrilled to present The Sixth Season, an exhibition of new works by Catharine Friend, Jane Marshall, and Sophie McVicar.
Catharine Friend is an artist and painter who lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama. Friend works within a wide range of styles and genres, such as figurative, landscapes, and abstraction. She received a BA from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, where she studied French and Art History and began painting full-time in 2001 after retiring from non-profit work. Friend paints and studies art extensively through working in her Crestline studio, taking workshops, and collaborating with fellow artists.

Jane Marshall is an artist whose career spans many years, numerous geographic locations, and diverse media investigations, including printmaking, painting, sculpture, and ceramics. Marshall’s work is an active engagement with her immediate surroundings, nature, and environmental issues. Educated at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with BA, MS, and MFA degrees in painting and printmaking, she has taught at several universities and colleges and has been awarded many artist residencies throughout her career. Marshall lives and works in Alabama and Michigan.

Sophie McVicar is a visual artist whose work celebrates the gentle beauties and tragedies of nature. She works in watercolor on paper, grounding her pieces in the endemic language used in Naturalist art and illustration. Her work embraces the scientific accuracy of the animal form while warping the environment to spur an investigation into the dynamic flux between Chaos and Order. Sophie received her degrees in Studio Art (BFA) and Chemistry (BS) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She currently lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama.
