Drawings by Sara Garden Armstrong, curated by Cumbee Tyndal, visual arts instructor at the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) and Director of ASFA’s Vulcan Materials Gallery, this body of work explores the relationship of sculptural form to organic landscape using charcoal, graphite, acrylic, pastels and fiber on paper. These large-scale works were created in the 1980’s and 90’s and are based on sculptures presented in a concurrent multimedia installation at ASFA; an exhibition which employs light and sound to fuse painted shadows to large three-dimensional handmade paper forms, transforming the gallery into a living, breathing environment of air, light, and sound.
