This book project can serve as a planner, recording device, carrier of memories, journal, and muse.
Using heavy paper book blocks (provided by instructor) we will fabricate a ‘formal’ codex book with soft covers and a historic Coptic/sewn on tapes binding. Knowledge of this flexible book form will allow for a great deal of future spontaneous play. Many possibilities of spine and sewing work will be demonstrated and discussed. Students will first be guided in creating innovative works by learning to combine familiar techniques with new approaches. We will then progress to investigating and experimenting with non-traditional materials and methodologies so that you can develop your own personal thematic subjects on page spreads and covers that will be bound into a book that you can work into further. Students are encouraged to use and experiment widely with any materials/found or decorative papers they want to bring.
