Southeastern Outings Short Hikes and Long Swims on South Caney Creek in Bankhead National Forest

Southeastern Outings Short Hikes and Long Swims on South Caney Creek in Bankhead National Forest

Presented by Southeastern Outings at KMart Greensprings and Jacks in Jasper are meeting places

I made a mistake in the carpooling announcement sent to Create Birmingham previously. The second meeting place is the Jacks in Jasper, NOT the Jacks in Double Springs. The corrected announcement is below.

We will leave as many cars as possible in that parking lot to the left of the Jacks in JASPER before going on to the trail head.

Since South Caney Creek Falls are south of Double Springs, we will not be going to Double Springs at all before the hike starts.

I apologize for my error.

Join Southeastern Outings folks for short, moderately easy hikes to two waterfalls on South Caney Creek.  We’ll swim at both of the falls. These falls are very lovely.

Wear old shorts or a swim suit and sturdy footwear you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. Old sneakers work well. Bare feet, flip-flops, loose slip-ons and thin-soled “beach shoes” are not acceptable! Also bring a towel along with your picnic lunch and water.

After the outing we are planning to go to the a restaurant for an optional dinner. You can shower and change clothes at a campground near the restaurant. If you would like to shower and/or clean up and have dinner with us at the restaurant, please bring a change of clothes for dinner and your shower things. No charge to use the campground rest room just to wash up and change clothes. If you wish to shower, please bring $2.00 exact change cash for shower fee.

Well-behaved, properly-supervised children age 7 and over welcome.

Depat 9:00 a.m. from the Kmart Green Springs or meet 10:00 am at Jacks in Jasper.

Please be advised that about 65 people are expected to participate in the stream wade and waterfalls walk in the Bankhead National Forest on August 22.

The parking area at the trailhead is very small and can only hold a few cars.  Also the U.S. Forest Service will not permit large numbers of vehicles to create traffic congestion by parking at the trail head.  Therefore all participants in this outing will be required to carpool from the Jacks in Jasper.  Only completely full cars will be permitted to drive to the trailhead.

A vehicle shuttle will also be necessary.  Once cars arrive at the trailhead, all passengers are to get out of the cars and hike down the trail to the first waterfall.  Drivers only will then take their vehicles minus passengers to the parking lot at a nearby church where we have fortunately obtained permission to leave cars.  Finally the bare minimum number of cars necessary to transport all the drivers from the church back to the trailhead will bring the drivers back to the start point of the hike.  Then the drivers will walk down the trail to meet up with the passengers at the first waterfall.

We can leave an unlimited number of vehicles at the Jacks in Jasper.

If you insist on driving your car to the trail head and are unwilling to take other people in your car with you, please don’t plan to come on this outing.  We apologize for the inconvenience and requirement to regiment our vehicle traffic.  However, with 70 or so people expected on this outing, organized carpooling and vehicle shuttles are essential.

Thank you.
