The Dead Poets’ Bash is a celebration marking the visit to Birmingham of traveling poet Walter Skold, on the road touring the country, visiting the gravesites of 500 influential American poets. At 4:00 pm Friday, July 10 he will visit the grave of local jazz great AND poet Sun Ra, buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Local poets, musicians and the general public are invited to join Skold graveside, where a reading and perhaps poets’ jam will be held. At 7:00 pm the celebration moves to the Continental Bakery Downtown, where local poets will read and Skold will give a presentation. Skold is a wonderful ambassador for the advocacy of poetry and this promises to be an interesting evening, and a rare opportunity for poets and poetry fans of all ilk to get together and celebrate the spoken word.
