Southeastern Outings Dayhike at Red Mountain Park in Birmingham

Southeastern Outings Dayhike at Red Mountain Park in Birmingham

Presented by Southeastern Outings at Red Mountain Park

Please come with us for a tour of a new trail in the Park that was just opened this past spring.  This new trail is a loop at the SW end of the park (past the hoist house) that connects the gravel road that passes north of the hoist house to the SW extension of the BMRR north roadbed.  The extension of the BMRR north trail is largely shaded and there are a number of interesting mining ruins along the newly opened extension of the BMRR north trail, including several very impressively large retaining walls.    The hike should take 3-4 hours, including time for lunch, and is rated moderate.  Although mostly level, be prepared for some uphill walking.  This is one of the largest city parks in the United States!  For considerably more information about the park, please visit the park’s website:

http://www.redmountainpark.org.

Please bring a lunch, plenty of water, and wear good walking shoes or boots. Dress appropriately for the weather.  Well-behaved, properly supervised children age 7 and up welcome.

DEPART 9:30 a.m. from the cul-de-sac at end of Frankfurt Drive off Lakeshore Parkway, so please arrive at the meeting place 15 or more minutes before this departure time.

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING PLACE

Red Mountain Park—2011 Frankfort Drive, Birmingham, AL 35211.  Meet at the cul-de-sac at the end of Frankfurt Drive, north of Lakeshore Parkway.  Going towards Bessemer from Homewood on Lakeshore Parkway, Frankfurt Drive is the 3rd right turn off of Lakeshore past its intersection with West Oxmoor Road.  Turn right onto Frankfort Drive at the traffic light where you’ll see a Chevron service station and sign for Red Mountain Park on your right.  Distance on Lakeshore Parkway from traffic light at intersection with West Oxmoor Road to traffic light at Frankfort Drive is 1.4 miles.  Parking is in gravel parking lots on the right of Lyon Lane, the road which turns to the right at north end of Frankfort Drive.  Parking is also available all along Frankfort Drive itself.  Regardless of where you park, please walk along Frankfort Drive to where Dan Frederick has parked his car and gather there to learn where we plan to hike and what we are going to do.  We will begin our hike from Dan’s parking spot, NOT from somewhere else.  Please do NOT gather on the hill at the trailhead.

NO DOGS OR SMOKING ALLOWED, PLEASE, ON ANY SOUTHEASTERN OUTINGS EVENTS.

The organization currently has over 300 members.  We scheduled ninety-two events during calendar year 2014 for an average of 8 fun events per month.  We enjoy the outdoors in all seasons throughout the year.  Twenty-nine people, on average, have participated in each outing during the first five months of 2015.

SEO does not charge for participation in any of its outings.  You do not have to be a member to participate in SEO activities.  Dues are only $10.  Please contact Dan Frederick, President, 205-631-4680, or seoutings@bellsouth.net for more information and to obtain three free monthly newsletters with membership application and a complete description of all our outdoor events.

Southeastern Outings now has a website.  Just go to seoutings.org to find announcements of all our upcoming outings scheduled plus some brief, general information about Southeastern Outings, a membership application and 1500 lovely photographs from several of our outings.
