Alabama Veterans Memorial

Presented by Alabama Veterans Memorial Park at Alabama Veterans Memorial

The Alabama Veterans Memorial is far more than just a park… It is a message from all Alabamians, recognizing the price of freedom and peace.

Amid peaceful Alabama woodlands, you can peruse the names of Alabamians lost to war. A time line in the Memorial walkway outlines historic events of the 20th century, visitors will find descriptions of Alabama’s 23 Medal of Honor recipients of the 20th century, and in the courtyard, Medal of Honor stories appear on columns with artwork and letters.  In our auditorium, enjoy presentations on the contributions Alabama veterans have made to preserve our nation’s freedom.

Veterans and their families are the soul of The Alabama Veterans Memorial. Their thoughts, letters, telegrams, and personal histories are communicated in several forms throughout the Memorial. Many of the "testaments" contributed to The Alabama Veterans Memorial Foundation are cast in metal and mounted with other reliefs on a series of columns standing tall and proud upon the hilltop Memorial complex. The words engraved in the memories of mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, wives and husbands – words that forever remind the ones who loved of the one they lost – are now engraved forever in this powerful monument at The Alabama Veterans Memorial in Birmingham.

An important mission of the Alabama Veterans Memorial is to educate young people about war and peace and civic responsibility. Today’s high school students were not born when the last US troops left Vietnam, and, if recent test results are valid, today’s college students have almost no knowledge of WWI and WWII and even less of the Korean Conflict. We should be thankful for our children’s lack of experience with war, but if we aren’t careful, the blessing of peace can lead to ignorance of the past and a dangerous complacency about the future.

The Alabama Veterans Memorial welcomes school groups of all ages. To arrange a student outing and guided tour of the Memorial, contact us today.
