On Saturday,September 26,the Norwood Resource Center http://norwoodresourcecenter.org/ will be hosting the second annual Boulevard Blast 5K and Fun Run/Walk benefiting the Norwood Resource Center and the residents of the Norwood Community. The Boulevard Blast is a certified 5K run (3.1 miles) which will be held in the historic Norwood Community of Birmingham, along the tree­lined Norwood Boulevard which has served as a symbolic thoroughfare of the neighborhood for more than 100 years. The 5K starts at 9:00 a.m. and the Fun Run/Walk at 9:30 a.m. The inaugural 2014 race was a great success, with over 300 participants. Come out and join us and not just for the race! There will be activities for the children, The Market at The Trolley Stop will be in full swing, there will be cooking demonstrations and plenty of fun for the entire family. The Norwood Resource Center (NRC) is a non­profit organization founded as a grassroots initiative with its mission being to provide educational activities and services that improve the life conditions in the historic Norwood community of Birmingham. Over the past fourteen years the NRC has expanded its role in the community. The Boulevard Blast is the Center’s signature event for its current “Get Healthy on The Boulevard Initiative”. Integral parts of this initiative include the Couch To 5K, the purpose of which is to get residents ready for the race/walk; the Junior Master Gardener Program, which offers an after school program and summer camp for school age children, second to sixth grade; The Norwood Learning Gardens, located on previously vacant lots and at Norwood Elementary School, which teach how to grow healthy produce while creating a culture of family gardening in a neighborhood setting; and The Market at The Trolley Stop entering its fourth year of bringing affordable fresh produce into the community.
