Join the Zoo for International Vulture Awareness Day on Saturday, September 5 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in many areas that they occur. Populations of many species are under pressure and some species are facing extinction. The Birmingham Zoo currently has 3 of the world’s 23 species of vultures. Enjoy this exciting day and learn how you can help vultures and about the important role vultures play in our ecosystem. Schedule of Activities:
10am-2pm: Visit a booth near the Zoo’s front entrance and receive “Biodorable” activity pages
10:30am: White-backed Vulture keeper chat; “carcass” feeding at Birds/Kori Kountry
11am: Scavenger Wildlife Show at the Schaeffer Eye Center Wildlife Stage
11:45am: Cinerous Vulture Keeper Chat; “carcass” feeding
12-2pm: Vulture “Vomit” Making and Upchuck Chuck at the Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter
1:30pm: Black Vulture Keeper Chat in the Corral in the Junior League of Birmingham – Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo
