Fossil Hunt

Fossil Hunt

Presented by Fresh Air Family at Meeting Spot

Join Fresh Air Family at one of the world’s most important fossil sites, so important, it may rewrite history! This site is so rich in fossils that paleontologists can study the behavior and populations of ancient creatures who pre-date the dinosaurs. One of our 9-year-olds found a fossil of museum quality –otherwise, you can keep your treasured finds. This recently discovered site took an Act of Congress to preserve Union Chapel Mine’s hundreds of fossils. It has been visited by scientists from around the world ever since. This hike is led by Carl Sloan, Fresh Air Family biologist and secretary of the Alabama Paleontological Society, which has been credited with many of the discoveries on this site.

Meet: The WalMart Parking lot in Sumiton 690 West Highway 78, Sumiton, AL (We cannot give out the location of the fossil site.)

Wear long pants and good shoes as it is rough terrain. You will need a small hammer and a screw driver to separate rocks. Bring a box with newspaper to take home your delicate finds! Sunscreen and water are essential in this full sun environment. Weather: Slippery conditions or rain will cancel this event.
