The dawn of full legal emancipation forced former slaves and former slaveholders alike to reinvent their work relationships so that both groups could meet the challenges of daily life during a difficult time. Paul Boncella of the Southern History Department draws on Freedmen’s Bureau labor contracts and WPA slave narratives to demonstrate how slave-slaveholder bonds both changed and stayed the same during the critical half year after the end of the Civil War.
The lecture will be held at the Central Library/Arrington Auditorium.
