Early Buddhist Art in India
Jan 18, Thurs
1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest
Instructor: Angie May, Assistant Curator of Education, Birmingham Museum of Art

The earliest phase of Buddhist art in India is referred to as aniconic; meaning there are little to no figural representations of the Buddha until around the 1st century CE. This so-called aniconic phase left a multitude of art rich in Buddhist symbolism, but lacking in a recognizable icon. This presentation will

trace the transition from non-representational Buddhist art to the creation of the now universally recognizable figure of the Buddha. Note: This program is part of a History of Art series offered by the Birmingham Museum of Art. A companion field trip to the museum will be held January 4 – see Field Trips at the end of the catalog.
