Charmaine Ortiz and Amber Scoon Art Exhibition

Presented by Birmingham-Southern College at Durbin Gallery of the Doris Wainwright Kennedy Art Center & Azar Studios

An art installation by Charmaine Ortiz and Dr. Amber Scoon, in conjunction with the annual Art Students League/Sloss Furnaces iron pour will be on display Oct. 2-29 in the Durbin Gallery at Birmingham-Southern College.

An opening reception for the exhibition and an iron pour by Sloss Furnaces metal arts sculptors will be held Friday, Oct. 2, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the gallery. The Herb Trotman Band will entertain during the event. Attendees to the iron pour will be able to purchase a sand mold to create their own iron keepsake.

Ortiz, a visual artist based out of Carolina Beach, N.C., received the Combined Honors Fellowship and earned her MFA in painting and a master’s in art history from Savannah College of Art and Design. She’s also earned fellowships and residency grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, among others. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Chelsea Art Museum in New York, the Cameron Art Museum in North Carolina, and the Museum of the Living Artist in California.

Scoon, a mixed media artist and philosopher from Pelham, Mass., received her bachelor’s degree from New York University and her MFA in painting from American University’s two-year program in Italy. She recently completed her Ph.D. in media and communications from the European Graduate School in Switzerland, where she is now the John Berger Fellow. As an assistant professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Scoon teaches drawing and art theory. She recently published Quantum Art (Atropos Press, Dresden/New York).

Ortiz and Scoon will give a free public lecture Friday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. in the art lecture room of the Kennedy Center/Azar Studios on campus.
