Early Buddhist Art in India

Presented by OLLI of Greater Birmingham and Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest at Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest

OLLI of Greater Birmingham presents Early Buddhist Art in India with instructor Angie May, Assistant Curator of Education, Birmingham Museum of Art. The earliest phase of Buddhist art in India is referred to as aniconic; meaning there a little to no figural representations of the Buddha until around the 1st century CE. This so-called aniconic phase left a multitude of art rich in Buddhist symbolism, but lacking a recognizable icon. This presentation will trace the transition from non-representational Buddhist art to the creation of the now universally recognizable figure of the Buddha. Note: This program is part of a History of Art series offered by the Birmingham Museum of Art.
