UNA-USA Banquet - Celebrating 70 Years of the United Nations

Presented by UNA-USA Greater Birmingham Chapter at The Club of Birmingham

United Nations Banquet Focuses on the Human Rights Issue of Human Trafficking and Alabama’s Role in the Global Conversation

Birmingham, AL-October 12, 2015- The United Nations Association Birmingham Chapter has announced that on October 22, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at The Club, located in Homewood, AL, the Chapter will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations commitment to human dignity and sustainability, with locally and nationally recognized human trafficking expert and human rights activist Sunnetta “Sunny” Slaughter, as this year’s guest speaker. Slaughter’s speech is said to address Alabama’s role in the global conversation of human trafficking as a human rights, issue, while encompassing the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how they directly impact us here in Alabama.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of ‘global goals’ that the 193 Member States of the United Nations have developed in order to come together ‘as one’ to take collective action to make improvements of the living conditions of people everywhere – in addition to protecting our planet for us and future generations.

Rebecca Kinney, President of the UNA-USA Greater Birmingham chapter stated “We are coming together to put an end to extreme poverty, improve health, realize equality for all people, get every child in school, and to address climate change.” In the spirit of moving forward in Alabama we will bring together people of all nationalities to work for a common goal first by inviting community leaders and interested citizens to join us on October 22, 2015 where we will recognize the contributions of the work that they do, and network to see how we can be even stronger! Next, we are poised to have further conversations and collaborations through the Human Rights Committee to bring together people who are acting to make our lives better locally and globally. On the night of the banquet attendees will represent each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, as well as, people from many different nations who call Alabama ‘home’.

If you would like to represent your organizations or national heritage at this event, there are still seats available!  There will be cultural performances during the reception from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
