"Panem et Circenses" Art Exhibition

Presented by Birmingham-Southern College at Durbin Gallery of the Doris Wainwright Kennedy Art Center & Azar Studios

Steve Cole and Jim Neel ’71, two longtime BSC faculty members in the college’s Department of Art and Art History, will present their recent artwork in a show at the Durbin Gallery this month. Panem et Circenses, Latin for “Bread and Circuses,” is an exhibition of sculptures, prints, and digital drawings addressing the politics of retaining power. In their exhibition, the artists examine contemporary sociopolitical norms by playing with ideas around truth and reality.

“At a time when our culture argues about the definition of facts, is inundated by fake news, and has, at the hands of the unscrupulous, been manipulated and divided into camps along religious and philosophical lines not seen since the American Civil War and rise of the Third Reich, we add to the disorder by creating our own fictions—our own ‘truthiness,’” said Neel.
