Javacia Harris Bowser, founder of See Jane Write and a local writer, educator, and entrepreneur, will offer a reading and workshop at the Shelby-Hoover campus of Jefferson State on Tuesday, March 6. Both events are free and open to the public.
Ms. Bowser will read from her work at 11:30 a.m. and host a workshop at 2:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the Health Sciences Building at 4600 Valleydale Road.
A professionally trained journalist, Bowser has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley.
She worked for several years for the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky before returning to her hometown of Birmingham in 2009 to teach at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, where she teaches English and has created an elective called Women and the Media to train students how to write for the web and how to examine representations of women in the media.
Bowser continues her professional writing career as a freelance journalist, columnist, and blogger. She has written for Birmingham magazine, USA Today, Birmingham’s NPR affiliate WBHM 90.3 FM, and a number of other media outlets. She writes a monthly column for B-Metro magazine and is a regular contributor to StyleBlueprint Birmingham.
