On Saturday, April 21st, from 10am-1pm the Legacy YMCA in Bessemer will celebrate Healthy Kids Day, the national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. This is a free community event that is open to all kids and families filled with fun games, active play, free giveaways, educational opportunities, and free access to the outdoor pool.

There will be a special appearance at 11am by Hall of Fame Globetrotter Michael Douglas who was a legend in his day. Today, he’s a Harlem Legend. That’s the name of the alumni group he got together to travel the country, spreading the message of inspiration and instilling character values in kids. He will provide families of all ages a fun and laughter opportunity to participate in an educational physical fitness experience through the game of basketball Globetrotter style. Michael says “Kids are our future. They look up to professional athletes and so we want to be the best possible role models we can be. “The Y is so much more than sports, swimming, fitness, and a place for kids to hang out. We support families in their efforts to instill healthy habits at home,” said CEO Michael Talerico, of Legacy YMCA. “ We know that it can sometimes feel like a challenge. So at Healthy Kids Day, we’ll encourage kids to stay physically and intellectually active all summer long.” The Legacy YMCA will waive Joining Fees for all new members on April 21st which is a savings up to $75.

For some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. In fact, research shows that kids are prone to gain more weight and fall behind in studies.
