The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde is a gem of a comedy in which two women have vowed to only love men named Earnest. Two men escape the boring duties of their station with deceptions for which they are completely remorseless.
In this gentle modernization, Algernon is a form of modern royalty: a Rock Star (or wants to be anyway). Lane is Algernon’s sound technician who Algernon never the less treats like a butler. Jokes and references that require knowledge of Victorian London and English society of the time are brought into a modern frame of reference. But the story remains as always a hilarious study in absurdly epic triviality full of wonderful epigrams like “The truth is rarely pure and never simple,” and “I do not approve of anything that interferes with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone.”
