Islamic Gardens- Gardens of Paradise

Islamic Gardens- Gardens of Paradise

Presented by Birmingham Botanical Gardens at Birmingham Botanical Gardens

In the Quran, the central religious text of Islam, Paradise is a place of flowing waters and cool, shady gardens- a stark contrast to the harsh desert climate in which Islam arose. Stretching from the depths of Moghul India to southern Spain, the Islamic world offered ornamental gardening a distinct sense of geometry and order, in addition to soothing watercourses and shaded areas perfumed with strongly scented flowers- a “dark green and luxuriant garden with a river running through it, planted with fruit trees, pomegranates, and palms.” Family Focus: Fuchsia, Oleander, Plumeria, Periwinkle, Orchid
