Bards & Brews Open Mic Poetry Event

Bards & Brews Open Mic Poetry Event

Presented by Birmingham Public Library at Birmingham Public Library - Central Branch

Bards & Brews, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL)’s popular spoken word poetry-craft beer event, is returning to the Central Library on July 6 with special entertainment provided by some of the University of Alabama’s most talented poets. Poetry will flow from 7:00-9:30 p.m. Free food and beer samples. Beer donated by Goat Island Brewing; Hop City Craft Beer & Wine will handle the pouring.

The Alabama Student Association for Poetry or ASAP will kick off the event at 6:30 p.m. giving a sneak preview of a performance they will present during the National Poetry Slam competition being held in Chicago August 13-18, 2018. The UA student poetry group was founded in August 2017 by UA senior Kailey Webster and Jahman Hill, a graduate student and one of the most popular past Bards & Brews performers. Webster is slam-master and president of the 30-member Alabama Student Association for Poetry; Hill is vice president.

Four of the five members of the team who will be competing in the National Poetry Slam, including Hill, will perform at the July 6 Bards & Brews.

“People can expect an exciting show,” Hill said. “We will give a sneak preview of some of the poetry we will perform in Chicago, including commentary on social justice, family, and relationships. Poetry is a great way to build dialogue and create positive messages to uplift our communities.”

The Alabama Student Association for Poetry holds monthly poetry events and writing workshops on the UA campus to connect the university to the Tuscaloosa community using poetry as a bridge. They also participate in poetry slams across the country.
