Simple Silkscreen Stencil Printing with Doug Barrett

Simple Silkscreen Stencil Printing with Doug Barrett

Presented by Forstall Art Center at Forstall Art Center

Participants will use their own sketches (or the strawberry image above) to create a simple, three color silkscreen print. Using the ancient technique of cut tissue paper stencil each person will create up to a 20 print edition. Prints will be registered in three colors; cyan, yellow and magenta, ink will be provided. Participants can achieve red, green, brown and black through overlaying the transparent colors. (e.g. magenta over yellow makes red, etc.) The final print edition will be printed on fine art printmaking paper. Lunch is provided.
Homework Assignment: Before arriving for the workshop each participant should create a pencil sketch centered on one sheet of the 8 x 10 printmaking paper. You can pick this paper up at F.A.C. during the pre-workshop. This one sketch is called a key print and will be used to register, cut tissue and print the other prints. Consider that you will be cutting tissue paper for each shape being printed in each color (3 total). We recommend that you keep shape complexity to a minimum (see sample above). Also think about overlaying shapes to make more than three colors.
Draw your sketch at the Pre-Workshop Meeting: Professor Barrett will be at Forstall Art Center on Friday, September 7, from 5pm to 7pm to answer questions, look at homework and offer advice. Feel-free to stop by and make your sketch on this day.

Saturday, September 8, 10am – 4pm. $145, supplies provided!
