As a fan of both comedy and role-playing games, Atlanta’s Remi Treuer has decided to incorporate both into a new live show.
The result is “Dungeon,” a sort of “Dungeons & Dragons” meets standup comedy format.
Treuer will serve as “the master” as comedians battle their way through difficult challenges involving fantastical dragons, relationships and whatever else might crop up.
Comedians will be given a prompt (e.g., a dragon is above you about to breathe fire on your head), and the story will unfold based on their choices as a given warrior, thief or wizard.
“Every player is unique,” Treuer said. “It’s largely improvisational, and I write the prompts for the players to react to. If their answer needs to be adjudicated, we go to the dice.”
Unlike “Dungeons & Dragons,” the show is a one-on-one experience in front of a live audience. There are no tables, and the minutiae of the game are removed.
“This show is accessible to anybody, comedy fan or role-playing fan,” he said. “It’s not like you need to know the mechanics of ‘D&D’ to understand what is happening. It’s very story-based … One thing follows another.”
