Southeastern Outings Wildflower Walk in Bucks Pocket State Park

Southeastern Outings Wildflower Walk in Bucks Pocket State Park

Presented by Southeastern Outings at Meeting Place: Food Giant Shopping Center Parking Lot is meeting place

Join fellow nature lovers for a walk on trails in this very scenic park.  We expect to have a wildflower resource guide knowledgeable in wildflower identification to hike with us on this outing.

In the morning we’ll first drive to visit High Falls.  This is a spectacular, large volume waterfall.  We’ll have our picnic lunch at High Falls Park.  Then we’ll drive a short distance to Bucks Pocket State Park for an easy stroll on trails in this very scenic park.  We’ll start at the overlook and walk slowly down to the canyon floor.  Along the way we’ll stop by and view two lovely waterfalls.  After that part of the hike in Bucks Pocket State Park, we’ll cross the creek and see even more wildflowers as we walk on a trail through the woods heading upstream beside the creek to a third waterfall.

Total walking distance in Bucks Pocket State Park is about 5 miles.  Hike rated moderate.  Well-behaved, properly supervised children age 7 and up able to walk five miles without complaining welcome.

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING PLACE

Food Giant Shopping Center Parking Lot in Pinson-6662 Alabama Highway 75, Pinson, AL 35126.   The parking lot in front of the Food Giant Super Market on Alabama Highway 75 on the north side of Pinson.  From Birmingham drive to Exit 128 on I-20/I-59.  This is one exit west of the Birmingham Airport exit off I-59/I-20.  It is marked Tallapoosa Street which IS AL Highway 79.  Coming from downtown Birmingham, as you get to the bottom of the exit ramp, get in the right lane.  The ramp curves to the right and then actually merges with AL Highway 79 headed north towards Pinson.  So bear slightly to the right at the end of the ramp.  If you are coming westbound from the Birmingham Airport area to exit 128, you will make a right turn onto Tallapoosa Street at the light at the end of the exit ramp.  Regardless of the direction from which you come, STAY ON THE VERY WIDE, MAIN CITY STREET WHICH IS TALLAPOOSA STREET.  In either case, do not make any turns off of Alabama Highway 79 until you get to Pinson.  Take AL 79 about 12 miles to the traffic light in Pinson, Alabama at intersection with AL 151 and ¼ mile west of intersection of AL Highways 75 and 151 where 75 turns right going away from Birmingham towards Oneonta.   Shell service station is at far left of intersection of Alabama Highways 79 and 151.  This is 12 miles north of the Tallapoosa Street (which IS AL Highway 79) exit #128 off I-59/I-20.

There is a Shell service station at the far left of that intersection and a Marathon service station at the far right of that intersection.  Turn right on AL 151 at that light and go 4/10 miles to the second traffic light.  At first traffic light go straight ahead as road becomes AL 75.  Turn left at that second light into the parking lot in the Food Giant Shopping Center and look for Southeastern Outings people gathered out fairly close to the highway.
