Yoga for Persistent Pain – Riding the Waves

Using the wave metaphor, pain builds, crests, and subsides. Always alert for threats, the brain can overreact sending our thoughts and feelings into a downward spiral. The body tenses and grips, magnifying the pain. Gentle yoga – the mindful movement, meditation on the breath, and deep relaxation – can shore us up to ride these waves of stress more skillfully.

Based on the Yoga of Awareness program by Kimberly and Jim Carson of Oregon Health and Science University, each class will begin with 45 minutes of discussion and meditation followed by 45 minutes of gentle yoga postures. No prior experience with yoga or meditation is required.

Participants will receive weekly handouts, meditation audio recordings, and light homework assignments to enhance the learning.
