Pattie and Josephine: Waiting in Alabama debuts at Vulcan Park & Museum

Presented by Vulcan Park and Museum at Vulcan Park and Museum

To further the efforts to educate the community on the passage of the 19th amendment 100 years ago and in conjunction with its latest exhibit, Vulcan Park & Museum has commissioned a play to spotlight Birmingham native and suffragette Pattie Ruffner Jacobs.

Pattie and Josephine: Waiting in Alabama is a one-act, two-person play that tells the story of Pattie Ruffner Jacobs and her friend Josephine as they compare their experiences fighting for equal voting rights as women of different races. This dramatic performance will capture the audience’s attention and highlight the complexity of changing a culture of racial and gender discrimination in regard to voting, an issue that is still of importance today. Written by Lee Shackleford and directed by Melissa “Mel” Christian, this play is in conjunction with Vulcan Park & Museum’s current exhibit, Right or Privilege? Alabama Women and the Vote celebrating the centennial of the passage of the 19th amendment.

There will be two showtimes – 2pm and 6pm. Admission is $10 ($8 for Vulcan Park and Museum Members). A cash bar will be available for purchase before the event. There will be limited seating so advance tickets are recommended. To purchase tickets, see visitvulcan.com/events.

Pattie and Josephine: Waiting in Alabama has been made possible with support from the Junior League of Birmingham, Alabama State Council on the Arts, Protective, Birmingham Bar Foundation, The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham, Alabama Power, Shipt and Alabama State Bar. Program partners include Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama, Birmingham Bar Association, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Samford University Cumberland School of Law, Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema, The League of Women Voters and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women – Birmingham Metropolitan Chapter.
