We begin with an introduction to original African pieces, moves to art expression after the arrival of Africans in America (Negro folk art), examples of African American fine art and finally to contemporary art.
Africans brought as slaves to America brought more than their labor. They brought enormous cultural influence on music, food and art. This presentation – prepared for Black History Month – concerns itself with the African influence on art. It begins with an introduction to original African pieces, moves to art expression after the arrival of Africans in America (Negro folk art), examples of African American fine art and finally to contemporary art. Features numerous pictorials of holdings from the Birmingham Museum of Art. Everyone welcome. Octavia holds a BA in Humanities and is a docent in training at the Birmingham Museum of Art.
