April Walking Tours

at Shelby Iron Works

Community leaders will guide these free tours through the historic districts or courthouse square areas of their hometowns. The hour-long tours start at 10 a.m. on April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.

During the late 1800’s and early 1900s the Shelby Iron Works was the South’s largest charcoal-fired blast furnace. It played a vital part during the Civil War with iron production, as well as post-war producing train car wheels. Shelby was a company town with many of the buildings built by the company.
