Crushing noise-rock power duo Djunah from Chicago appear at the Nick on Saturday, March 14.
Djunah (pronounced JUNE-uh) resurrects singer/guitarist/bassist Donna Diane’s raw, aggression-soaked performance style into a crushing noise-rock power duo that needs to be seen as much as heard. The former Beat Drun Juel frontwoman is a multi-instrumentalist who sings while playing two instruments simultaneously — guitar and a massive-sounding Moog bass organ she plays with her feet. She’s joined by drummer Nick Smalkowski, a veteran heavy hitter from Midwest acts like Arctic Sleep and Fake Limbs.
Their debut album, Ex Voto, was recorded by Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio and released in November 2019. Djunah have opened for Converge, Screaming Females, and Summer Cannibals. THE FADER named the band’s first single “Animal Kingdom” one of the 20 best rock songs of August 2019. CVLT Nation praised the band’s debut album as “an angular noise rock escalator run on power and beauty … a record that should be heard by all music lovers, no matter what scene you are a part of.” New Noise Magazine called it “an instant classic, like we’ve got a new Melvins on our hands.”
