Visual Art Summer Camps and Courses 2016!

Space One Eleven (SOE) is offering exciting art camps for rising 2nd through 12th graders. Join professional artists in our studios to draw, paint, and create with clay and fabric arts! Specialized camps in a variety of mediums are available for middle and high school students. Creations will be displayed during the annual Student and Teaching Artist Exhibition to be held in SOE’s art galleries on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.

Students will work with a variety of media to create 2 and 3 dimensional projects that are influenced by historical or present-day artists from Alabama and that coincide with the theme, I’M AN ALABAMA ARTIST, TOO!

Fired Up! Clay Workshop
Grades 6 – 8

Tuition: $215
Students learn all about the techniques of hand building and surface decorating while creating a variety of decorative and functional objects. Projects are then fired up in our kilns at nearly 2000° F!

Modern Masters: Drawing and Painting
Grades 6 – 8
Date: June 20 – 24, 2016

Tuition: $215
Use a variety of drawing and painting media to create your own masterpieces! Students will look at modern and contemporary artists including Frida Kahlo, Rene Magritte, Joan Mitchell, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Realism not required!

Here’s Looking at You! Hand Coloring for Black and White Photography
Grades 6 – 8
Date: June 20 – 24, 2016

Tuition: $215
Pull that cell phone out of your pocket! Take a selfie or other photo, then transfer the image to watercolor paper and hand color your printed photos. Designed for all skill levels, this course will cover photography fundamentals such as composition and perspective; and the basics of value, and color theory. Bring your cell phone or digital camera.

Clay Sculpture Workshop
Grades 9 – 12

Screens, Stencils, and Squeegees! Screen Printing 101
Grades 6 – 12
Date: July 11 – 15, 2016

Tuition: $215
Students are introduced to the screen printing process, from initial artwork creation and setting up a press, to pulling the squeegee and printing. Students will print their own designs on a variety of surfaces. Students will be asked to bring a T-shirt to print on.

Fabric and Fiber Fun! Textile Art
Grades 6 – 12
Date: July 18 – 22, 2016

Tuition: $215
Students develop color and pattern on fabric through hands-on techniques including ice dyeing, color resist, texture rubbing, stenciling and stamping.  Students will also explore a painterly approach to embroidery by using basic embroidery stitches along with collage techniques to create mixed media embroidery artwork.

Portfolio Development

Tuition: $285
Are you a serious high school art student who plans to major in art or design in college? Are you a younger student who would like to apply to an art-focused high school? If so, this intensive, one week course will help you build or enhance your portfolio. Students will have the exceptional opportunity of individual portfolio reviews and recommendations to be conducted by Dr. Mary Ann Culotta, former Examiner of Art and Design in the Southeast for the International Baccalaureate Organization. Following Dr. Cullota’s recommendations, teaching artist Lanette Parker will guide students to develop their individual projects. Students will strengthen foundation skills by rendering works from life, and will have the experience of peer critiques in progress. A partial supply list will be provided at registration, and a complete supply list will be provided on the first day of class following portfolio reviews. Class size is extremely limited to ensure individualized instruction.
