Choral Evensong for Ascension Day

Choral Evensong for Ascension Day

Presented by Cathedral Church of the Advent at Cathedral Church of the Advent

The Cathedral Choir sings the traditional Anglican service of sung Evening Prayer at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in celebration of the Feast of the Ascension, a Holy Day observed each year in commemoration of Christ’s Ascension into heaven. This feast day occurs on the 40th day of Easter season. To attend in person, please register at https://adventbirmingham.org/worship/, beginning May 7. The service will also stream at https://adventbirmingham.org/live/.

The Cathedral Choir, under the leadership of Frederick Teardo, Director of Music and Organist, and Charles Kennedy, Associate Director of Music and Organist, sings monthly Choral Evensong services throughout the program year. The service of Choral Evensong uses the Order for Evening Prayer, taken from the 1662 edition of the Book of Common Prayer. Each service includes an Introit, the Canticles, and an Anthem, and is framed by hymns sung at the opening and close of the service. The Canticles sung are the Magnificat (Song of Mary) and Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon). In addition to two lessons read from the Bible, the clergy officiant gives a short homily reflecting on the readings of the day.
