Brief description of the plot:

Young Naples sailor Martin Eden rescues Arturo, a scion of the bourgeois Orsini family, from the attack of bandits, who invites him to his home. Here Martin falls in love with Arturo’s sister Elena. The cultured and sophisticated young woman becomes a love obsession and a symbol of the social status to which Martin seeks to rise. He begins to educate himself and dreams of becoming a writer. But Martin’s literary writings are rejected by editors as too new for standardized tastes. And for Elena and her bourgeois family, the lack of a “position” is a problem, or rather an unforgivable disadvantage. Under the influence of the old intellectual Ress Briessenden, Martin meets the socialists, coming into conflict with Elena and her bourgeois world.
