Listen to Dr. R. Scot Duncan discuss Alabama’s natural biodiversity on Zoom.
Dr. Duncan will talk about why Alabama ranks fourth in the nation for biodiversity and why that ranking is so important to our state. Through his book, Southern Wonder, published in 2013, he interweaves the disciplines of ecology, evolution, and geology to explain why Alabama is home to more species than any state east of the Mississippi River. When all the species of birds, trees, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, wildflowers, dragonflies, tiger beetles, and ants are tallied, Alabama harbors more species than 90 percent of the other states in the United States.
