Davis Series presents Sandbox Percussion and Elspeth Davis

Presented by Samford University School of the Arts at Brock Recital Hall - Samford University

Described as “exhilarating” by The New York Times, and “virtuosic and utterly mesmerizing” by The Guardian, Sandbox Percussion has established themselves as a leading proponent of this generation of contemporary percussion chamber music. Brought together by their love of chamber music and the simple joy of playing together, Sandbox Percussion captivates audiences with performances that are both visually and aurally stunning. Through compelling collaborations with composers and performers Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum and Terry Sweeney seek to engage a wider audience for classical music. Sandbox Percussion performs throughout the United States and made their United Kingdom debut in 2019 at the Vale of Glamorgan Festival in Cardiff where they premiered a new work by Benjamin Wallace for percussion quartet and fairground organ.

Elspeth Davis is a Brooklyn based mezzo-soprano specializing in new music. Past season highlights include György Ligeti’s “Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedűvel” with Sandbox Percussion at Trinity Church Wall Street, in a program that also included composer Christopher Cerrone’s companion piece, “Goldbeater’s Skin;” “The Juliet Letters” with the Argus Quartet, and The Defiance through Art series with Arizona Opera and Violins of Hope.

Elspeth made her European debut as Der Trommler in Der Kaiser von Atlantis with Schülterwerke and the Klangforum Wein in Vienna, and was one of the seven singers invited to the inaugural season of Liederfest in Suzhou in Suzhou, China, where she performed Bernstein’s “Arias and Barcarolles” and Brahms’ “Liebeslider Walzer.”

She is also an avid lecturer, and a founder and co-host of the music podcast “Opera After Dark.”
